International Day
GCS needs CAS students to work alongside parents and the student council body to help plan and organise the GCS International Day event held on March 29th.
International Day is a day that celebrates student, staff and parent’s diversity and variety of cultures from around the globe. It is a big day and needs prior planning to implement the various food stalls, decorations, regional dress, music, dance, games etc.
In order to organise the event, students will have to meet weekly (looking at possibly Tuesday afternoons) with parents and the student council body.
This is a chance to plan an event that can showcase the school at its best and we need your help to facilitate this.
Please see Ms Marie McKinnon on the ground floor next to reception if you would like to be part of this committee.
You will get CAS hours for Creativity and Service.

Operation Smile helps children with facial disfigurement pay for surgery
by admin on Nov.23, 2011, under Current Projects, Grades 11-12, Grades 6-8, Grades 9-10
One in 600 children worldwide is born with a cleft lip and/or palate every year. The condition makes it difficult for sufferers to eat, speak and socialize. Often born to disadvantaged families without the means to afford the surgery, most of these children are shunned by their community. In the worst cases, such as with baby girls in some parts of rural China, a cleft lip can become a death sentence.
Working across 70 countries worldwide, this non-governmental organisation provides free reconstructive surgery for children born with facial deformities. During the past 30 years, it has provided more than two million patient evaluations worldwide and 200,000 free surgeries for children and young adults.
In January, Operation Smile launched in the UAE, opening a local fundraising office, and the group’s advocacy work has already funded two missions to Morocco and the Philippines. The missions have provided more than 400 surgeries across both countries.
Dhs880 pays for a 45-minute operation that can change a child’s life forever.
How to help: Get in touch with Operation Smile at www.operationsmile.org.ae (050 617 6746) to see how you can help. eg volunteering at one of the local fundraising events.
Fundraise yourself and donate the money to this cause.
See Ms McLay for any ideas you might have.
